How to Apply False Eyelashes for Beginners, Step by Step
How to measure and trim strip lashes, when to apply the glue, how to place them close to your lash line and blend with mascara, then remove them gently.
False lashes add volume and length in minutes and make a big difference in wedding and party photos. The first time can feel tricky, but these steps make it easy.
Prepare your eyes
Finish eyeshadow and eyeliner first. A thin line of liner close to the lashes hides the lash band once it's on.
Measure and trim
Hold the strip against your eye before any glue. If it's longer than your eye, trim from the outer end, not the inner one; the inner end is shorter and designed to sit near the corner of your eye.
Glue and wait
Apply a thin line of lash glue along the whole band, with a little more at both ends. Wait a few seconds until it turns tacky, because wet glue slides.
Apply
- Look down into the mirror.
- Place the middle of the strip first, as close to your lash line as possible.
- Secure the outer end, then the inner end.
- Press gently on the band for a few seconds until it holds.
Blend
Add a light coat of mascara to blend your own lashes with the strip, and fill any gap between band and lashes with a thin line of eyeliner.
Remove
Peel the lashes gently from the outer corner, then wipe leftover glue off the lid with a cotton pad and makeup remover. Clean the glue off the band and keep the lashes in their case if you want to wear them again.

A light coat after applying them blends both together; avoid a thick coat on the false lashes themselves.
Why does the corner lift after I apply them?
Usually the glue wasn't tacky yet, or there wasn't enough at the end. Add a tiny dot of glue and press for a few seconds.
