How to choose the right mascara and apply it without clumps

Volume or length? How brush shapes differ, how to apply mascara step by step without clumps, and when false lashes are the better choice.

Mascara opens up your eyes in seconds, which is why most of us keep it even in the lightest makeup. The right formula and the right technique make the difference between full, separated lashes and clumpy ones.

What do your lashes need?

  • Short lashes: a lengthening mascara with a brush that separates and reaches the tips.
  • Thin or sparse lashes: a volumising mascara with a dense brush that carries more product.
  • Straight lashes: a curved brush helps lift them, together with an eyelash curler before mascara.

The brush makes the difference

A curved silicone brush separates lashes and coats them evenly for a lifted, defined look. A dense brush carries more product for a full, bold look, better suited to evenings.

Applying mascara step by step

  • Apply mascara after powder and eyeshadow, on clean, dry lashes.
  • Wipe the excess off the brush on the rim of the tube.
  • Place the brush at the root of the lashes, wiggle it gently side to side, then sweep upwards.
  • Add the second coat before the first one fully dries to avoid clumps.
  • For lower lashes, hold the brush vertically and use only the tip.

Avoiding clumps and smudges

  • Don't pump the brush in and out of the tube; it pushes air in and dries the mascara.
  • Close the tube tightly after every use.
  • If mascara smudges under your eye, let it dry and remove it with a dry cotton bud.
  • Replace mascara about every three months, as old mascara dries out and clumps.

When to choose false lashes

For weddings, parties and photos, false lashes add volume and length that mascara alone can't reach. Measure the strip against your eye first and trim from the outer end, apply lash glue to the band, wait a few seconds until it turns tacky, then place it as close to your lash line as possible. A light coat of mascara blends your own lashes with the strip.

Remove mascara gently

Hold a cotton pad soaked in makeup remover on your closed eye for a few seconds so the mascara melts, then wipe downwards gently without rubbing, so you don't lose lashes.
