Face primer before makeup: do you need it, and how to apply it

What primer does, when it really makes a difference, the right order from moisturiser to setting spray, and how much to use.

Primer is the step between skincare and makeup. Many of us skip it, then wonder why foundation goes patchy or disappears after a few hours. So do you really need it?

What does primer do?

Primer preps the skin with a smoother, more even surface, so foundation spreads more easily and makeup looks more even. Think of it as a base layer between your skin and your makeup.

When do you need it?

  • When foundation looks patchy or uneven on your skin.
  • When pores are visible and you want a smoother look.
  • For weddings, events and long days.
  • In summer and humid weather, together with setting spray at the end.

For a very light look with just moisturiser and powder, you can skip it.

The right order

Cleanser → moisturiser → sunscreen in the daytime → primer → foundation → concealer → powder → blush and highlighter → setting spray.

How to apply primer

  • Apply it to clean, moisturised skin.
  • A pea-sized amount covers the whole face.
  • Spread it from the centre of the face outwards with your fingertips.
  • Focus on pores and areas where makeup fades fast, such as the nose and forehead.
  • Wait a minute before foundation so it settles.

Common mistakes

  • Too much primer makes foundation slide instead of stay.
  • Applying foundation before the primer has settled.
  • Rubbing primer in hard instead of smoothing it on.

Primer with the right foundation

For oily skin, pair primer with a matte full-coverage foundation; for normal and dry skin, with a hydrating soft-coverage foundation. Blend both with a damp sponge for a natural finish.
