Loose or compact powder? The difference and when to use each

How loose and compact powder differ, which one suits oily, dry or combination skin, and how to pick a shade and apply it without a heavy look.

Powder sets foundation and concealer and controls shine, yet many of us can't decide between loose and compact powder. In fact each one has its own job, and many makeup artists use both.

Loose powder: for setting

Very fine and light, it comes in a jar with a sifter. Its main job is setting makeup at home before you go out: it controls shine, gives a smooth, natural finish and keeps under-eye concealer in place.

Compact powder: for your bag

Pressed into a small, easy-to-carry case, it gives light coverage that evens out the look of your skin. It's your friend during the day: a quick touch on the forehead and nose when shine appears, or on its own over moisturiser for a very light look.

Which suits your skin?

  • Oily skin: loose powder to set makeup in the morning and a compact in your bag for touch-ups.
  • Dry skin: a very small amount only where you shine, not all over the face.
  • Combination skin: focus on the forehead, nose and chin and keep the cheeks light.

Pick the right shade

Choose a shade close to your skin tone or to your foundation. Powder much lighter than your skin can look dull or grey in photos, while a darker one changes the colour of your foundation.

How to apply it

  • With a big fluffy brush: a very light layer all over, tapping the excess off the brush first.
  • With a sponge, pressing: stronger setting under the eyes and around the nose, without wiping.
  • Finish with a mist of setting spray to melt any powdery look into the skin.
