How to choose a perfume and make it last longer

The difference between perfume types, how to test a scent before buying, and where to apply it so it lasts longer in the UAE climate.

Perfume is part of your personality, and choosing one takes a little patience. The key things that help you find a scent you love that lasts.

Know the concentration

  • Eau de Parfum: a relatively high concentration that lasts long, the favourite for evenings and occasions.
  • Eau de Toilette: lighter and fresher, good for daytime and work.

Understand the stages

A perfume has three stages: the top notes in the first minutes, the heart after about half an hour, and the base that stays for hours. Spray it on your wrist and wait before you decide.

Oriental or fresh?

Oriental scents have oud, amber, musk and vanilla: warm, long-lasting and loved for evenings. Fresh scents have citrus and marine notes: light and ideal for summer days.

Where to apply it

  • On pulse points: wrists, behind the ears and the base of the neck.
  • On moisturised skin; dry skin loses fragrance faster.
  • Do not rub your wrists together, it makes the top notes fade faster.
  • A light mist on a scarf or clothes keeps the scent longer, away from delicate fabrics.

Store it well

Keep perfume away from sun and heat, especially in the car in summer, as heat changes the scent over time.
